Elena — My Mother Called From an Empty House

My phone rang in the middle of the night. The caller ID showed my mother’s name, although she had died several years earlier. When I answered, she sounded calm and slightly distracted, as if calling from the next room. She asked me to come home because I had forgotten something important in the kitchen.

The childhood house stood exactly as it had before she became ill. Every light was on. Dinner remained warm, the clock ticked, and a radio played a song she used to sing while cleaning. Yet the house was empty. Whenever I called for her, my voice returned from a different room.

On the kitchen table sat an old voicemail recorder. It contained messages I had never heard. In each one, my mother described a future moment from my life: a breakup, a move, a lonely birthday, a decision I had not yet made. I heard my own footsteps through the recorder one second before I took them.

The final message was being recorded live. My mother’s voice came from upstairs: ‘Do not listen until you are ready to forgive the person who survived.’ In her bedroom, the bed was perfectly made except for a hollow in the pillow, as if someone had just lifted their head. The closet door slowly opened.

Inside was not clothing but the kitchen again, with me standing beside the recorder. The final message was labelled with my name rather than my mother’s. When I pressed play, I heard myself say, ‘I kept waiting for grief to become proof that I loved her enough.’ The house went dark, but the phone remained lit. My mother whispered, ‘You can leave without losing the way back.’
