Amara — Someone Was Living in My House While I Slept

Small things in my apartment changed overnight. A chair faced the wrong direction. A second cup appeared beside the sink. The bedroom window stood open although I remembered locking it. I began photographing every room before bed, but in the morning the photographs had changed too.

I installed cameras. The recordings showed only me walking through the apartment while I believed I was asleep. The other Amara moved differently. She watered dead plants, reread messages I had deleted, and placed a second plate at the dinner table. Before sunrise, she returned every object to almost—but not exactly—its original place.

One recording showed her standing beside my bed for six hours. At sunrise she looked into the camera and said, ‘She thinks this is her life because I let her wake up in it.’ Behind her, the sleeping version of me opened her eyes and looked directly at the lens.

I rushed to the bathroom. Written in the steam were instructions for finding a key beneath the floorboards. The key opened my front door from the inside but not from the outside. Beyond it was a hallway lined with dozens of identical doors, each bearing my apartment number. Behind every door someone quietly turned a lock.

At the end of the hallway, the other Amara was setting the second dinner plate. She said one place belonged to the life I showed people and the other to everything I guarded when nobody was watching. Then she asked which of us was the intruder. The lights went out, and I heard my own key entering the lock from the wrong side.
